AGRICULTURE
Although it remains an activity prone to many vagaries, it offers a stable way of life.
But the heath was a hardly cultivable support for a long time, and poverty conditioned the peasant life every day in the past. The provision of lime has considerably fertilised soil from the 19th century, so culture and livestock farming has been very improved. That's why wheat, corn, barley, alfalfa encroached progressively on rye and oats.
Ovine and bovine perpetuate the bulk of the regional livestock. The pigs are less often reared now.
Many fruit trees have flourished on the land of Durenque, but never any fruit was the subject of a controlled production. Today, the orchard of Crozes successfully exploits the culture of apples and by-products.
CRAFT
Except for the presence of some innkeepers, there were no real jobs before the end of the 19th century. It is only from this period that jobs, generally to do with agriculture, appeared. Later bricklayers, blacksmiths, clog makers, millers, bakers, etc... were established.
Craftsmen are still very present in Durenque today.
Several firms deal with the shoe-industry in Durenque, for example Dolby Shoes (wholesaler and retailer), Chauss entreprises (specialist of security footwear), Dominique Costes (orthopaedic footwear), and Pierre Wostyn (high quality bootmaker).
With the diversity of small companies, Durenque is keeping pace with modern working life.
